The historic town of Windsor is a must on every visitors 'must-see' list when on vaction in the UK, and for good reason.
Bounded by a loop in the River Thames as it flows downstream towards London and by the ancient Royal hunting park of Windsor Great Park, the town is dominated by Windsor Castle - the largest occupied castle in the world and primary residence of the Queen of England.
Tourists visit Windsor from all over the world and at all times of the year. Windsor Castle is after all, one of the primary tourist attractions in the UK outside London, together with Stonehenge (2,000BC stone circle) and Stratford-upon-Avon (birthplace of William Shakespeare). However, Windsor has far more to offer than a whistle stop tour of the castle and a sprint down Eton high Street in the wake of a clip-board waving guide, to take a photo of Eton College, the famous Public School (which in England means that it's private!) recently attended by Prince William and Prince Harry.
Eton is a delightful town with a High Street that runs down from the bridge (built in 1898 and one of the first cast-iron bridges in England - now closed to traffic) to Eton College. Lined with old buildings and small shops, seemingly from a past and more gentle era, with art galleries and interesting places to eat. Windsor, its larger neighbour has old streets to explore, quality shopping, its own Windsor Royal Theater, cafes and restaurants at every turn, and not one but two railway stations that provide rail links to London for day and evening trips.
Lots to do and lots to see, but plenty of opportunities for relaxing and watching the world go by too. One such quiet retreat, that is likely to tempt you is The Watermans Arms - just a few steps way from the rental cottage, and a pub that was no-doubt named after the bargemen who once lived in the nearby streets of Victorian terrace cottages.
THE HOLIDAY RENTAL COTTAGE
This rental property is just a few minutes walk from Windsor Castle, on the Eton side of the river. One of the 19th Century Bargeman's cottages that overlook the famous Brocas Field and the River Thames. The castle is just across the river and can be seen from the rear bedroom window. The webmaster has visited the property and walked to the foot of the castle and into Windsor High Street in a little under 5 minutes.
The cottage has been recently renovated to create a bright open living area with patio doors that open onto a garden and the Brocas Field beyond. The lounge area has comfortable seating and TV, with a modern fireplace as a focal point. However, the eye is drawn to the patio doors which let the light flood in.
The garden has been landscaped and features a patio area with table and chairs plus a barbecue. In the evenings you can eat al fresco, while watching the pleasure craft, ancient launches and skulls on their evening parade. Or the sight of swans gathering by the bridge for a feast served from the kitchens of the luxury Sir Christopher Wren's House hotel.
The front stable door opens into the kitchen which is equipped with all you need for self-catering, including hob, oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer - although Windsor and Eton have a huge choice of cafes and restaurants, so you are unlikely to be doing much cooking-in on this holiday! The dining area has a table and chairs for 4.
RENTAL ACCOMMODATION
This cottage has 2 bedrooms. One double and one twin bedroom.
The main bedroom has a double bed and views over the garden, Brocas Field and the River Thames.
The second bedroom has twin beds.
Both bedrooms have ample storage space.
The main bedroom has that wonderful view and the second bedroom is a real treat too, with a high ceiling, stripped pine floor and that view of the castle.
The upstairs bathroom has been newly installed.
LOCATION
Windsor and Eton are to the West of London and approximately 15 minutes from Heathrow Airport. Eton is separated from Windsor by the River Thames. The rental cottage is on the Eton side of the river, about a 10 - 15 minutes walk from either of the two railway stations.
Windsor
Windsor has a delightful area of cobbled lanes and old buildings, with interesting shops and restaurants in the shadow of the castle. More shops can be found down the main street (Peascod Street) and a 'Covent Garden' style shopping and cafe area has been created in the old Royal Windsor station, where the original steam train build for Queen Victoria can be seen.
The webmaster is a regular visitor to Windsor and is of the opinion that the hot chocolates served in the 'English Theatre Cafe', yards from the bridge cannot be beaten (the capachinnos and food are good too) - so stop here for refreshment on your adventures!
The Royal Windsor station has an operational service (not steam!) that will whisk you to Slough and on to London's Paddington station (good for the shops and theatres of the West End) within around 30 - 40 minutes. The 'Riverside station' joins a different mainline that takes you into London's Waterloo station (good for the City, Tower of London, etc) in around 1 hour.
Eton
Eton is a delight to wander through, with its old buildings and many shops, including art galleries and antique shops. The famous Public Boarding School for Boys, Eton College is at the end of the High Street, about a 10 minute walk from the bridge. Look up and around as you walk, because many of the shops themselves are interesting, and you will find interesting plaques and historic architectural artifacts.
BOOKING INFORMATION
