Son Bou
Situated on Menorca's longest beach, a glorious 3km stretch of fine golden sands separated from the neighbouring resort of Santo Tomas by a rocky headland. The beach gently shelves into the clear blue of the water with bathing safely regulated by use of a flag system. Extensive water sports including jet skis, water skiing and pedaloe hire are available along the length of the beach. Son Bou is a relatively new development and great care has been taken to ensure that the resort with its clusters of villas and apartments has retained its pleasant green aspect with a backcloth of wooded hills and an abundance of the original woods remaining amidst extensive landscaping.
The holiday accommodation is set back from the sea by a nature reserve and so the resort is a perfect combination of all the conveniences for a wonderful holiday toegether with that breath of fresh air and nature that one comes on holiday for and refreshes one . . .
The nature reserve is wonderful. The sea is across a marsh which the frogs call each other at about 8 o'clock. About 2 hours later they all stop at once and it goes quiet. It's wonderful to listen to!
At the centre of Son Bou is a square with shops, a supermarket, telephones and also the Club San Jaime - a popular spot with families with its bar, pizza and pasta restaurant, swimming pool and water chute.
Other areas of the island are easily accessible from Son Bou with the main backbone road just a 5km drive away at the town of Alaior, notable as the centre of Menorca's cheese industry!
San Jamie
A beautiful location in which are the Son Bou Gardens Apartments. The abundance of trees and flowers against the white buildings and blue skies means that each corner you turn brings another picture-perfect view. Son Bou Gardens are part of the very popular San Jaime complex and these comfortable apartments offer a homely, village-style atmosphere. An ideal choice for families who will enjoy comfortable, bright accommodation together with a superb range of amenities with something for everyone. The list of amenities includes three swimming pools * Paddling pool and water-slide (high season only - payable locally) * Sun terrace * 3 bars * Restaurant * Pizzeria * 2 A la Carte restaurants * Supermarket * Shops * Tennis court * Playground * Maze (June-Oct and a small charge payable locally) * Disco and Entertainment twice weekly (June-Oct) . . . and the beauty is that this is far enouggh away from our apartment to be convenient but without the disadvantages . . . one can't hear it. So it's a wonderful place for a family holiday where you can relax and young people won't get bored.
with everything at your convenience just a little way away from our apartment.
Typical visitor opinion:
"This was our fifth time to the brilliant holiday island of Minorca. We keep going back there because it has everything you want for a superb family holiday. Great beaches, friendly people, guaranteed sunshine and no larger louts!"
Son Bou has a good selection of bars and restaurants to choose from that vary from typical spanish type restaurants, to Pizzeria's and Chinese. Nice atmosphere in the resort that is geared towards families. The beach is fantastic and you can always find a space even in the height of summer. If you want to, there's windsurfing and water-skiing as well. If you can tear yourself away from the sea, you mustn't miss the chance to visit Torre d'en Gaumes. Situated only three miles away, it is one of the island's most significant prehistoric settlements. You don't even have to leave the beach to inspect another ancient relic - the remains of a 5th century Paleo Christian basilica, discovered buried in the sand in 1956.
Families who discover the San Jaime Apartments return year after year, as we know from personal experience!
Only five miles away, Alaior houses a tempting range of stores selling jewellery, pottery, wood, gifts and - of course - shoes. This is an important industry in the town, and you will find some great bargains, especially in the factory shops on the outskirts. This is also a good place to look for locally produced Mahon cheese. And don’t miss the town’s colourful markets - craft on Saturdays and local produce on Thursdays.
Location
The resort of Son Bou on the south coast of Minorca, approx 20 km and 20 minutes by car from the island's airport at Mahon.
Alayor is the nearest real town to Son Bou, at 5 miles inland. The local fiesta takes place here during the first two weeks in August and a small local market every Thursday morning. Evening entertainment is mainly hotel based, but the resort does have a small disco as part of the Son Jaime complex.
Attractions
A must to see and do in the day and evening for children of all ages is the "Laberinto" or maze. This massive wooden structure is about the size of a small football pitch and I defy anyone to solve it in less than 45 minutes. During the day you have to collect various coloured fish and stamp a game card with the letters M A Z E, whilst being "rained" upon by a sprinkler system. During the late evening the "game" becomes a little sinister by the threat of being chased by either a swamp monster or ghost. Perhaps a little too scary for the very young, but for anyone over the age of 8 a real must do!
Next to the maze is a small water slide. Not very large but certainly two very fast flumes.
A mini train runs around the resort and the round trip takes approx 45 minutes.
Nature
Son Bou is a major birdwatching area with a wide variety of habitats. It is situated fairly centrally on the south coast of the island.
The main habitat is a huge reed bed comparable in size to the famous ones at Minsmere and Leighton Moss in England. Unfortunately however, (at the time of my visit) the reeds are undergoing rapid succession and will be turning into a woodland in a few years time! There is no open water and some needs to be created, urgently!
The town of Son Bou has encroached on to the eastern most part of the reserve but the western end is little affected. A steam flowing between rugged limestone cliffs feeds this western end and it is here that the likes of Egyptian Vulture and Raven can be seen.
The reed beds are fronted by dunes and coastal scrub and the largest beach on Menorca. Most tourists stay close to the hotels and so the beaches become less disturbed at the western end.
To the east is a big limestone cliff sticking out into the sea. This is good for Blue Rock Thrushes and for sea-watching. Migrant hirundines and swifts swirl in the thermals above this area.
It is possible to walk the whole way round Son Bou. This would take three to four hours (assuming frequent stops along the way) and would certainly provide many birds.
