Unique in all Italy, this villa location once provided a tranquil monastic hermitage to St. Francis of Assisi who founded the monastery of Le Celle in Cortona, and now brings cooling breezes and exquisite peace to artists, writers, walkers, and anyone seeking comfort and proximity to the hill towns of Tuscany and Umbria.
For generations, most of the mountain top has stayed in one Cortona family, whose summer retreat near its summit was formerly an abbey. A thousand acres of unspoiled land includes the owner's simple villa and this 13th-century restored stone rental cottage, that was once lived in by shepherds, next door. A distinguished Italian gentleman - your host - has stories of the area that go back through centuries of his family's history here.
VILLA FOR RENT
This rental cottage has been beautifully renovated with all modern conveniences for self-catering guests.
RENTAL ACCOMMODATION - 2 bedrooms, sleeps 5-6
The rental cottage includes two separate suites each with bedroom and bath, and a delightful 'reading room' adjoins the master bedroom.
Heavily beamed ceilings and wooden windows that open out to the views over the Tuscany countryside add to the holiday charm of this property.
CORTONA TOURIST INFORMATION
The Etruscan hill town of Cortona nestles against Monte Sant'Egidio (elev. 1200m), where an ancient Roman road now wends its way through pastures and wooded hills.
A network of walking trails begins just outside the door of the villa, and spectacular views unfold everywhere. Across the spread of the Valdichiana one sees Monte Amiata and Monte Cetona in the distance. Just below are the rooftops and churches of Cortona, and beyond one sees beautiful Lake Trasimeno, where Hannibal once defeated the Roman armies. On foot one can follow traces of the ancient Roman Road down to the cleft below Cortona where St. Francis established the monastery known as "Le Celle" in 1211 (the monastery of Montecassino is further South near Fiuggi). Or take your walking stick and circle the mountain's heights, on wooded trails that open to 360-degree views.
A car is necessary here. It takes 15 minutes to drive the few winding kilometers down to the town of Cortona, with its noted art treasures, architectural beauties, weekly market, elegant shops, and summer music festival. Two-lane paved roads also wend around the mountain to tiny hamlets with local produce and country eating places. Within 20 minutes drive one can find enough history and art to occupy an entire stay.
The mountain top retreat provides an ever cool and fresh respite from sightseeing in the heat of the Italian summer. Yet it is only a short drive to Arezzo (20 miles), Montepulciano (15 miles), Siena (50 miles), Perugia (32 miles), Florence (62 miles), and dozens of other storied towns and cities of Umbria and Tuscany. Express trains from Terontola station speed to Rome and Florence.
Travel options to Cortona
One can fly into Rome (3 hours drive) or Milan (5.5 hours drive), or choose among the smaller airports of Florence, Pisa, Perugia, or Bologna. Hiring a car at the larger airports tends to be less expensive, but rentals are available at them all. Fast trains stop at nearby Terontola on the way to Rome, Florence, and Venice, and parking is available free at the station. One needs a car to drive to the property on Monte Sant'Egidio, and directions will be supplied on booking.
